About Us

Since it’s creation in 1856, Atascosa County has been an increasing population area with the rural feel of the country. Just south of San Antonio, Atascosa County has been a place for the capture of the imagination with the local legends, the myths and most unbelievable, the real cast of characters that have resided in Atascosa County. 

Prior to 1856, this land of Atascosa was a ranch for the San Antonio Missions where Atascosa County’s first cowboys were born. Later, it was used as a retreat and passing point for revolutions and those involved. As the settlers trickled in, they were met with challenges. Challenges from the native land and the indigenous people that at times could become violent. Nonetheless, the early settlers and pioneers persevered, and their descendants continue to thrive today.

As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 48,491 which is ranked #71 in Texas. On average about 840 new residents move to Atascosa County each year. Our projected population for 2030 is 53,181.
